HIGHTLIGHTS Timeless landscapes, gracefully carved hills, golden meadows of corn, gentle fields of sunflowers, vast verdant pastures of grazing cows and fine boned horses, exquisitely maintained country estates... all are a quintessential part of old New England still alive and well in the Litchfield Hills.

Pedal past 26 working farms from dairy and beef to sheep and horses and along the sky reflecting waters of Twin Lakes, Mudge Pond and the Housatonic River. In Falls Village take a walking tour of this bucolic 1840's riverside village to admire its well preserved American architecture.

Parking: The parking area is located between Academy St. and Library St., both are off of Rte. 44/Main St. in the center of Salisbury. Extended parking is not available on Main St.

Terrain: This ride can be characterized by rolling country lanes, winding wooded roads, several challenging climbs and steep descents interspersed with flat surfaces. Most of this ride is on lightly traveled narrow country lanes with no shoulders with the exception of Rte. 41 and Rte. 126 which have good shoulders.

0.0 At the jct. of Rte. 44 and Library St. or Academy St. in the center of Salisbury, take a right onto Rte. 44 and pedal through this lovely village.

0.2 At the jct. of Rte. 41 and Rte. 44 in front of the White Hart Inn, bear left onto Rte. 41 north. On this section of road you will pass six farms and Under Mountain Inn.

4.6 At the intersection of Rte. 41 north and Hammertown Rd., take a right onto Hammertown Rd. a rolling narrow country lane.

5.6 At the end of Hammertown Rd., take a right onto Taconic Rd.

5.9 At the triangular village green in Taconic, take a left onto Twin Lakes Rd. passing a small Post Office on your left. This shaded country road is winding and narrow with no shoulder.

7.3 At the fork in the road, bear right continuing on Twin Lakes Rd. Bike through wooded countryside and along the shoreline of Twin Lakes, the third largest natural lake in the state. 9.8 At the intersection of Twin Lakes Rd. and Weatogue Rd., turn right continuing on Twin Lakes Rd. 10.6 At the jct. of Twin Lakes Rd. and Rte. 44 turn left onto Rte. 44. 10.9 At the jct. of Rte. 44 and Rte. 126 in North Canaan, take a right onto Rte. 126 south to Falls Village. Along the way you will pass several farms and Robbins Swamp, the largest inland wetland in the state.

14.3 Enter the historic district of Falls Village continue following Rte. 126.

14.7 At the jct. of Rte. 126 and Main St., turn right onto Main St. and follow into Falls Village. Take time to explore the charms and hospitality of this quiet riverside hamlet.

14.9 At the intersection of Main St., Railroad St. and Rte. 126, take a right onto Rte. 126 15.0 At the intersection of Rte. 126 and Water St., take a right onto Water St.; pedal under the stone overpass and past the power station, the entrance to several walking trails and the great falls, are all worth exploring.

15.5 Just after crossing the Housatonic River on a metal bridge bear left at the fork and pedal along the Housatonic River passing a riverside picnic ground on your left.

15.9 At the intersection of Brinton Hill Rd. and Dugway Rd., bear left onto Dugway Rd. and continue following the river. 17.7 At the jct. of Dugway Rd. and Rte. 112, facing Lime Rock Park, take a right onto Rte. 112.

To Shorten Your Ride Follow Rte. 112 for one mile, take a right onto Salmon Kill Rd. and follow for 4.3 miles to the jct. of Rte. 44. Take a right onto Rte. 44 and follow for .2 miles to the center of Salisbury where this loop began.

18.4 At the intersection of Rte. 112 and White Hollow Rd., take a left onto White Hollow Rd., a winding and narrow country road that is uneven in spots with one tricky descent.

22.8 At the intersection of White Hollow Rd. and Calkinstown Rd., take a right onto Calkinstown Rd. and begin the only challenging climb on this section of road which soon turns into one long continuous descent. This is a narrow road with no shoulder. 23.8 At the fork, bear left and continue your descent on Calkinstown Rd. to Sharon. 24.6 At the jct. of Calkinstown Rd. and Rte. 41 in Sharon, turn left onto Rte. 41. passing many lovely country estates that line the stately Sharon Green.

25.2 At the jct. of Rte. 41 and Rte. 361 by the Sharon Green, take a right onto Rte. 361 west (West Main St.) and begin the one steep descent on this otherwise flat stretch of road.

26.2 Take a right onto Mudge Pond Rd. and pedal along the shoreline of this scenic pond ringed by country estates. Along the way, Mudge Pond Rd. becomes Indian Mountain Rd.

30.7 At the jct. of Indian Mountain Rd, Mudge Pond Rd. and Rte. 112, turn right onto Rte. 112 passing Interlaken Inn.

32.1 At the jct. of Rte. 44 and Rte. 112, continue on Rte. 112 east, passing several beautiful horse farms.

34.9 At the jct. of Rte. 112 and Salmon Kill Rd., take a left onto Salmon Kill Rd.

39.1 At the intersection of Salmon Kill Rd. and Rte. 44, take a right onto Rte. 44.

39.3 Enter the center of Salisbury where this loop began.
