Rain date March 3rd.  Before the first robin or the first crocus appears, there is a sure sign that Spring is coming to New England. The apparatus of maple syrup making-plastic tubes snaking through the woods;collecting tubs settled by the side of the road-make their annual appearance. Today the making of maple syrup is an industry,a professional undertaking, but for much of our history it was a family affair. If you have a maple tree on your property, you can re-create this historic ritual and make it part of your family’s tradition. The process of making syrup in the old fashioned way is fairly straight forward and it provides an opportunity for families to enjoy the great outdoors while connecting with our past.Equipment is simple and easily improvised;the costs are minimal, but the memories will last a life-time. On Saturday March 2nd, at 2PM the Barkhamsted Historical Society will present a demonstration/workshop on how to make maple syrup in your own back yard at the Squire’s Tavern
