Housatonic River Adventure Source-to-Sound Paddle Trip

To commemorate its 75th Anniversary and celebrate the many partners who protect the river, the Housatonic Valley Association (HVA) is hosting the Housatonic River Adventure, a 10-day Source to Sound paddle trip, from April 22 to May 1, 2016. Celebrations and educational programs along the journey will connect thousands to the beautiful river that runs through the Litchfield Hills and Fairfield County. Many partner organizations from the surrounding watershed will join HVA for this historic river adventure. Registration, required for paddling, can be done online starting March 1. Gimme Shelter--Field Walk, Presentation and Art Show--by Richard and Debbie Martin--Sun., May 1, 2016 at 8:00 a.m.
at GMF's Childs Center, 200 Canaan Mountain Rd., Falls Village CT. Richard and Debbie Martin, chairpersons and land stewards for the 106 acre Boyd Woods Audubon Sanctuary in Litchfield, CT, will share their story of how they came to understand the
wildlife benefits of "unsightly" clear cuts. Leading a walk through GMF's New England cottontail rabbit habitat cut, they will discuss the shelter that it provides for this rabbit, as well as the many bird species and animals that these cuts attract. After the walk, stay for coffee and refreshments while you hear their informative and entertaining slide show entitled "Our Experience Implementing a New England Cottontail Project at Boyd Woods Sanctuary". With colorful photography, insight, and humor, this program will help you to see how an "unsightly" clear cut can become a much needed young forest habitat for many wildlife species in our state. Debbie Martin's nature collage art will also be on display for you to enjoy. This program is free, but reservations are required.
