Wings of Freedom Tour Brings Vintage Airplanes to Oxford

The Wings of Freedom Tour will be at the Oxford Airport from September 5 to September 7, 2014 and arrive at 2 p.m. on Sept. 5th and depart on Sunday at 5 p.m.  The Tour brings historic aviation to your community.  Tour through the authentically restored aircraft or take a flight aboard for the ultimate immersion in history.  The B-17, B-24 and P-51 are on the 25th season of the Wings of Freedom Tour. Visitors are invited to explore the aircraft inside and out; $15 for adults and $6 for children under age 12.  WWII veterans can tour through the aircraft a no cost.  Call for further information.

On Thursday, June 2, 2011 at 6:30PM at the Gunn Memorial Library Author Josephine Johnson will discuss SS Asteroid or Tell it to the Bees.  Her story recounts the restoration of an 1800s ship moored in England's River Adur.  Complicating the challenge on board are a young, romantic reporter and a combat-seasoned river historian.  Both via for the new Captain's affections while reliving the memories of two Word Wars and their aftermaths.  Josephine will sign copies after the discussion and proceeds of book sales will go to the Library.  This program is free and open to the public.  Registration is recommended.

Ansonia Nature Center Features Hikes to Celebrate Connecticut Trail Days

On Saturday, June 4, 2011 from 9AM take a two hour hike beginning at the Ansonia Nature Center.  Guest naturalists, Peter and Barbara Rzasa will lead the hike.  Appropritate for ages five through adult.  The Ansonia Nature and Recreation Center and the Connecticut Forest and Park Association are sponsoring a free hike during which participants will experience the fragrances of field and forest on Connecticut Trails Day.  Stems leaves, roots, and fruit of many plants produce a variety of fragrances ranging from the sweet smells of spice bush and sweet birch to that of bitter chokecherry and putrid skunk cabbage.  Hikers will searcch for other fragrant plants such as sassafras, sweet fern, wild garlic, ginger and sweet cicely.  Call to register in advance.
