On Sunday, August 18, 2013 from 3-5PM the Aldrich will present Shadow of the House, an intimate portrait of the Cuban-American photographer Abelardo Morell, whose work is on view at the Museum in Legacy: The Emily Fisher Landau Collection in partnership with Connecticut Film Festival. Morell's life seems quite ordinary on the surface, but our understanding of the artist deepens as layer after layer of the man and his influences are revealed: the compelling journey as he flees Castro in the early sixties; growing up as a teenager in New York; life as both an American family man and a Cuban refugee, who feels more American than Cuban; a photographer who feels safer working at home, but whose career increasingly pulls him into the outside world. Director Allie Humenuk works alone as she follows Morell for over seven years at work, at home, and abroad. Because of an offer to make a book, Morell returns to Cuba in 2002 for the first time since his escape in 1962. The trip pushes him to confront his past and his familial allegiances—his parents fiercely object to his return. Finally, after forty years of being stateless, Morell becomes an American citizen.
