November 20, 2015--Gunn Museum gives a"Fireside Chat" at the Mayflower Grace. Go back in time with Gunn Historical Museum curator Stephen Bartkus to discover the fascinating story behind the Holiday House (1893 - 1918). The well-known local architect Ehrick Rossiter designed this magnificent hotel, now a ruin in Steep Rock Preserve. The imposing building, bearing a striking resemblance to the Mayflower Grace, once stood proudly on a hillside overlooking the Shepaug River. Built by Edward van Ingen, a wealthy wool merchant who owned 1,000 acres around the Washington Green, the Holiday House, complete with ballroom and bowling alley, was a philanthropic initiative that offered young women working in the factories of New York City, a restorative vacation retreat in the Litchfield Hills.
