They Sawed up a Storm

Location: Norfolk Library. 4 pm. Free. Author Sarah Shea Smith will discuss her book They Sawed Up a Storm about a group of New Hampshire women who operated a sawmill on the shores of Turkey Pond in Concord, New Hampshire in 1942. The sawmill, one of two on the pond, was built by the U.S. Forest Service to saw up what remained of the logs stored in the water from the hurricane of 1938. They Sawed Up A Storm is a book about this group of women, the 1938 hurricane, the timber salvage efforts and the determination of the people of New England at the time the U.S. entered into World War II.
Sarah Shea Smith was Extension professor and specialist, Forest Industry, at the University of New Hampshire Cooperative Extension for 27 years. Sarah has worked as a hardwood lumber inspector, a teacher, and a door-and-trim carpenter. She holds a bachelor of science degree in forestry and a master's in occupational education from the University of New Hampshire. Sarah and her husband, Peter, live in Newmarket, New Hampshire.
