11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Join the IAIS staff and friends at our Tenth Annual Green Corn Festival as we welcome the first corn of the season with music, food, family, & fun. Come and enjoy fun-filled  activities for the whole family including drumming, dancing, crafts, storytelling, powwow style food, arts and crafts for sale, and much more.  Corn is an integral part of the annual cycle of life for many Native American people and when the first tender ears are ripe for picking it is cause for celebration. This year we welcome back Native Nation Dancers, Schaghticoke, Objiwa and Lumbee, dancing both Northern and Southern Traditional styles along with newcomers to the IAIS Albert Zamora, (Mashantucket Pequot) and Althnageebah Myles (Dine), and Christopher Newell (Passamaquoddy) from Mystic River Drum Group . Also joining us this year are Storytellers Janis Us (Mohawk-Shinnecock descent) and Darlene Kascak (Schaghticoke). Fee:  $10 Adults; $6 Children. Held Rain or Shine.

 

Danbury Railway Museum Hosts 7th Annual Danbury Railway Days

The Danbury Railway Museum is pleased to host the 9th annual Danbury Railway Days on Saturday and Sunday, August 1 and 2.  Two days full of educational activities and FREE train rides for the whole family is planned.  The fun will begin at 10am and end at 4:00 PM, with train rides hourly from 10:30 to 3:30.  Admission to the museum is $10.00 for ages 3 and up ($9.00 for museum members). The museum will be operating the Railyard Local — a short FREE trip being pulled by an EMD SW-8 switch engine, built in 1953, with locomotive cab rides available.  The train will stop at the old New Haven RR turntable, built circa 1914, where visitors can detrain and take a ride on the only power-operated turntable in Connecticut.

Saturday, August 1, 2015 at 10AM: Curator's Walking Tour: Litchfield and the Colonial Revival. In conjunction with our exhibit The Lure of the Litchfield Hills, curator of collections Jessica Jenkins will lead a walking tour exploring some of the Colonial Revival hot spots around town. Taking the stories of the Colonial Revival out of the museum, participants will have a chance to hear about how areas of town, such as the business block and town green, underwent major changes in the first part of the 20th century. Ms. Jenkins will also explore the motives behind the social movement and touch on the evolution of the appearance of private homes as well as such iconic building as the Congregational Church. Join us for a intimate look at the Colonial Revival Movement in Litchfield and take a walk through history as you learn why Litchfield looks the way it does today.
