Bump or Bust Mogul Competition JANUARY 22, 2011 - New location for this 5th annual mid-season bump competition.  The only one of its kind in Southern New England.  We're going to create a world class bump comp venue that has become expected of our Mountain Operations team.  This event caters to people looking to get a taste of the competitive bump scene or simply to socialize with others while having fun on the moguls. Registration begins in the lodge at 11:30am.  Once you've received your bib number, you can begin practice.  Competition begins promptly at 1pm and will be conducted in a singles format start to determine head-to-head brackets.  Sponsors to be determined.  Awards on the deck. A Free History Day Workshop will be held on Saturday January 29, 2011 from 10:30 to 12 noon at the Torrington Historical Society's Carriage House Gallery, 192 Main Street, Torrington.  History Day in Connecticut is part of the National History Day program. It makes history come alive by engaging students in grades 6-12 in the discovery of the historic, cultural and social experiences of the past. After researching their topics, students present their findings in original papers, performances, documentaries, websites or exhibits. History Day registration closes on February 8, 2011 and the district contests are held on March 26th 2011. The Torrington district contest will be held at the University of Connecticut Torrington. Cut It Out: The Local History and Practice of Ice Harvesting

Ice harvested from Bantam Lake was used for refrigeration throughout the year. Begin in the Museum with a visit to the Ice House display, then head outdoors for a walk down the Lake Trail to visit the old ice house ruins. The program culminates with our own "Cut Ups", Jeff Greenwood and James Fischer, demonstrating how ice was cut and moved using the same tools and methods. Dress for the weather. We will be walking and standing on Ongley Pond for extended periods of time. Wear warm boots and prepare for wind and sun. Hot Beverages and treats will be provided to fortify you! 11:00 A.M. – 2:00 P.M., Meet in the Museum....FREE ...Donations will be accepted to help defray the Conservation Center's programming expenses.

On Saturday, January 29, 2011 Scotland's most famous poet, Robert Burns, will be honored at a Highland Feast with a piper, Celtic music, and Haggis at St. John's Episcopal Church Parish Hall, Washington Green.  The evening will feature a six-course meal with smoke salmon, venison, partridge and a tasting of six to 10 single malt whiskeys.  Kilts, thews and tartans are encouraged and everyone will join in the recitation of favorite Burns poems, toasts, prayers and the singing of "Auld Lang Syne.  The cost is $95 per person with a portion of the proceeds to benefit St. John's Community Outreach Committee.  Call for reservations and further information.
