7:30 pm at C.H. Booth Library. "Newtown's Mills and Other Industries: Why We Missed the Industrial Revolution". Early Newtown like all of its neighbors supported a wide range of mills and other support industries which supported local subsistence agriculture. By the early 20th century towns such as Bethel, Danbury, Shelton, and Bridgeport became fully industrialized cities. Newtown did not become industrialized although it had all of the necessary preconditions to do so. Dan Cruson, Newtown's Town Historian, will explain what those preconditions were and why the revolution was aborted.
