12th Annual Car Show--Torrington

On Friday, July 10, 2009 (rain date July 17th) the Torringford Volunteer Fire Department's 12th Annual Car Show which will take place out in front of the Warner Theatre on Main Street from 5PM to 9PM. The Warner Theatre will transform back to a time when classic movies could be seen for just $1. The Warner's screening of the iconic movie musical Grease, staring Olivia Newton John and John Travolta, will be presented at 8PM and tickets, which are all general admission are only $1. Refreshments, featuring $1 bags of fresh popcorn will be available. The car show outside the Warner is free to the public. Admission for those wishing to exhibit their cars at the event is $5 for motorcycles and $10 for all other vehicles.

Litchfield County Writers Project at the University of Connecticut's Torrington campus will host "Lincoln: The Man and the Myth," with Charles Van Doren, the noted academic scholar, editor and author of more than a dozen books. The fifth annual summer reading by Professor Van Doren is now a firmly established date on the cultural calendar in Litchfield County. The distinguished academic turns his attention to Lincoln after delighting audiences with readings and considerations of his father, Mark Van Doren, Mark Twain, Robert Frost and Emily Dickinson in previous years. After the reading, Charles Van Doren will be signing copies of his work, including "The History of Knowledge" and "The Joy of Reading." All LCWP events are free and open to the public. No reservations are needed.
