On Saturday, November 8, 2008 from 9AM to 3PM the Harwinton Congregational Church will hold its annual holiday fair and tag sale. Lunch will be served from 11AM to 1PM. A handmade, queen-size autumn quilt will be raffled. Tickets $1. A silent auction of fleece and hand-knitted hats, scarves and handcrafted gifts, as well as cheese and baked goods will be available. Harwinton's own Cat's Meow Collection, new this year--The Skinner House.

9:00 a.m. guided hike. Join Park volunteers Jane, Dawn, Rita, George, Bruce, Steve, Lou and Jim as they lead participants on a two to three hour hike on the trails at Tarrywile. The information below pertains to all hikes. The hikes are free and will only be canceled in the event of heavy rain or snow. Hike participants are encouraged to wear rugged, sturdy shoes, bring water, bug spray and a snack if desired. All hikes start at the Red Barn Environmental Center with participants parking in the lower Mansion parking lot.

Antique maps have an enduring appeal with their artistic charm and historic value. Joel Third will review early cartographic concepts including Greco-Roman influence, the minimal progress during the Medieval Period and the Islamic knowledge-bridge from Greco-Roman times to the Renaissance. Emphasis will be placed on the Age of Exploration. A selection of attractive 16th and 17th century maps will be displayed, discussed and available for review. Event takes place in the Garden House Sunday, November 15th at 2 PM. The general fee is $10 and $8 for museum members.

The LCWP at UConn Torrington examines the definitions, protection and abuse of human rights in the fall 2009 series: Justice, Injustice and Human Rights. Taking part will be award-winning film and television director, Joyce Chopra and playwright, Bill C. Davis. Davis' play, "Avow," was hailed by The New York Times as, "timely and provocative," and tells the story of Brian and Tom who are Catholic and want to be married in the church. The documentary film, "Gramercy Stories" directed by Chopra, will also be screened as part of the evening. Time: 6:30pm - 9:00pm Free and open to the public.
