On Thursday, March 14, 2013 the Oliver Wolcott Library will host Mary Ann McGourty:  A Slide Presentation--Garden in Autumn at 7PM.  Mary Ann McGourty and her late husband Fred were the owners of Hillside Gardens, a nursery in Norfolk, specializing in uncommon perennials and perennial garden design.  Their showcase garden at Hillside has been featured on PBS television's Victory Garden.  Mary Ann lectures extensively throughout the U.S. and is a past director of the Perennial Plant Association, a national nursery trade organization.  Programs at the OWLibary are free and open to the public. On Friday, March 15, 2013 at 12 Noon, Dr. Ira Spar will discuss Civil War medicine in "Health Care Delivery in Connecticut during the Civil War."  In the era before antisepsis and antibiotics, the devasting effects of a new weapon of destruction called the Minie ball resulted in more than 55,000 amputations.   Spar will demonstrate the effects of this bullet on wood, pig femur and muscle in clinical demonstations.  Dr. Spar is a member of the Society of Civil War Surgeons.  This lecture is part of the Litchfield Historical Society's Civil War programs offered on the third Friday of February and March.  Call to register or email.
