On Sunday, June 12, 2011 at 3PM the Kent Singers will hold a concert at the Stone Church in New Preston.  The Kent Singers an auditioned group of singers that has performed in the area for 38 years, will present--Songs for a Summer Afternoon--an a capella concert suited for its historic setting.  Tickets $10 adults, $8 seniors and children, age 12 and under.

Harriet Beecher Stowe's 200th Birthday - Litchfield Historical Society to Throw The Party

To commemorate Harriet Beecher Stowe's Birthday, born on June 14, 1811. On Tuesday, festivites will begin at 3:30 p.m. with a children's birthday party for Stowe, featuring a scavenger hunt of Harriet Beecher's childhood haunts, party games, journal entries from the young Harriet as well as friends who knew her, and of course, a birthday cake. The fee for this event is $5. per child. In the evening from 7 to 8:15 p.m., Jerry Geci will lead a discussion on Stowe's Poganuc People. We will also feature letters written by Harriet during her time at the Litchfield Female Academy. Cake will be served following the discussion. The Historical Society has a limited number of copies of the book and participants are welcome to reserve their copy. This event is free to members and $5 for non-members. On June 18th, 10 p.m. the Historical Society's walking tour will feature sites related to the Beecher family and the mark they left on Litchfield. On Friday, from 5-7:30 p.m. and on Saturday, from 7:00 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. The sale will be held at the Oxford Grange on Route 67 in Oxford. At the same time on Saturday, the Oxford Grange is holding a tag sale and selling refreshments in the building basement. Proceeds from the sale will go towards restoring the Twitchell-Rowland Homestead, a 1755 saltbox which the Society moved to a new location on Towner Lane in 2006. Work is underway to renovate the building for use as a museum of local history and a meeting place.
