Kent Historical Society Offers Children's Art Programs

07/07/2014 to 07/25/2014

4 Studio Hill Rd., Kent, CT 06757. Phone: 860-927-4587.

The Kent Historical Society will offer three weeks of art programs for children in July. The first two weeks will be for children interested in developing their fine arts skills and the third will be a series of crafting sessions. KHS wants to foster arts education for young people in the area to honor the memory of George Laurence Nelson, a pre-eminent 20th Century artist known for his portraits, landscapes and florals. The society is launching this new Summer Arts Enrichment to encourage children's innate creativity, boost creative thinking and problem solving, while expanding their experience and appreciation of the arts. Artist Cheryl Moore, who is chairman of the Art Department at South Kent School, will lead two weeks for children in exploring visual arts. Moore is a respected artist and a 32-year teacher, who knows how to draw out artistic talents from her students. Moore will explore several watercolor projects, florals with pastels and mixed media. Classes will take place in the Kent Historical Society's "Art Barn," an indoor/outdoor space on the campus of the Historical Society's Seven Hearths property, facing gardens and woodland that will be used as extended classroom space. Art Enrichment fees are $100 per week for non-members and $90 for KHS members. Both weeks will be from 9 a.m. to noon with a variety of projects. The dates are July 7 to 11 for ages 8 to 12 and July 14 to 18 for ages 5 to 9. The registration deadline is July 1. KHS will also offer Beginning Crafting at the Art Barn for a week-long program of fun craft projects from July 21 to 25 for ages 5 to 7.  This program is offered Monday through Friday from 9 to 10 a.m. The instructor is Linda Cohen, who has offered summer programs at KHS for several years. The crafting projects will include decorating wooden birdhouses, landscape design, picture frames, treasure boxes and designing T-Shirts.
