Litchfield Historical Society - Baptism by Fire: A Lecture on the 2nd Connecticut Regiment

7 South Street, Litchfield, CT Phone: 860-567-4501.

Join us at the Litchfield History Museum on Tuesday, August 6 at 7:00 pm as Shane Makowicki discusses the motivating factors of the volunteers who fought in the 2nd Connecticut Heavy Artillery, Litchfield County's regiment during the Civil War. Without the contributions of the volunteers who made up almost the entire Union Armies, the American Civil War may well have turned out differently. The question of what drove these men to join up, and to fight, is not only an interesting sociological question; it is an absolutely vital one which facilitates understanding of   the conflict itself. Makowicki will explore the reasons the men of the 2nd Connecticut continued to be willing to face the horrors of combat after they had experienced the carnage of their first battle at Cold Harbor. This lecture is free and open to the public.
