COLUMBUS DAY ORIENTEERING PROGRAM AT THE ANSONIA NATURE CENTER--On this holiday, Columbus Day, October 14, at 2:00 p.m., bring the kids to this introductory orienteering class led by Ranger Wendy. Children must be able to read or be at least six years old.  Learn to use a compass and a map to find your way around the park. Bring your own compass or buy one at the Nature Center store. This program is also ideal for scout groups. Tuition is $3.00 per person.  Please call to register.

In honor of Columbus Day, The Torrington Chapter of Unico National, an Italian-American service organization, and the Torrington Historical Society will present a program about Italian-Americans on October 16, 2013. Time: 6:30 -9:00 pm. Place: Torrington Historical Society -Carriage House Gallery. Admission: Free. The program "Our Lives Are Stories" will feature author, Mario G. Fumarola of Macungie, PA. Mr. Fumarola will discuss Italian-American immigration including the difficulties that Italian immigrants overcame and the rich contributions they made to the cultural fabric of America. An intermission with refreshments will be followed by a panel discussion with members of Torrington's Italian-American community. Panelists, including Peter Pino, David Frigo, Raymond Mascetti and Francesca Lascari will tell stories about the Torrington Italian-American experience. Mario Fumarola is a first generation story teller and writer. He is the author of three books that focus on Italian-Americans: Wasn't It Only Yesterday, Immigrants All, and Last Of The First. Fumarola was born to Italian immigrant parents in Utica NY in 1935. After serving in the US military, Fumarola began a long career in the insurance industry. After retirement he turned to writing and speaking to share personal stories of Italian immigrant history. The Torrington Historical Society is partnering with the Torrington Chapter of Unico National to celebrate Italian-American heritage and to document Torrington's Italian-American history.

HUNTER'S MOON HIKE AT THE ANSONIA NATURE CENTER--On Friday, October 18, at 7:00 p.m., join staff for a trail walk lighted by a full moon. With leaves falling, and prey animals fattening up, this is the time of year when the native Americans who once inhabited our area, used to hunt to provide food for their families. Families and adults are welcome to join the hike. There must be at least one adult for each child.  Please call to register for this free program.  Foul weather cancels.
