Join Dr. Carole Shmurak as she leads a book discussion and gets everyone talking.  Winsted Fire Department announces its annual carnival will be held on August 14 and 15, 2013 from 6 to 10PM and August 16 and 17 from 6PM to approximately 11:30PM.  Wrist bands are $20 to allow patrons an unlimited number of carnival rides.  The "beer garden" will host live local bands August 15 - 17, 2013.  Bingo will be held each night with cash prizes awarded for each game.  Fireworks are scheduled for 9:15PM on August 16.  The parade is set for 6PM on Main Street downtown on Aug. 17.  More than 40 fire departments from throughout the state will compete for trophies.

The Yellow Birds by Kevin Powers is the next selection for the monthly Adult Book Club meeting Wednesday, August 14, 2013 at 7PM at Thomaston Public Library.  The novel, written by an American veteran of the war in Iraq, tells the story of two young soldiers facing combat for the first time and their struggle to stay alive.
