Flanders Nature Center Farm School


5 Church Hill Road , Woodbury, CT

9:30 am. North Barn. $5/$10. Kids and their caregivers will meet the Flanders sheep and feel their beautiful, soft wool used for knitting and felting. They will learn how a shepherd takes care of these incredible wooly wonders. They will then enjoy a hands on experience using some wool for an art project to take home. Baa, Ram, Ewe! Let's learn about Sheep... Sheep have roamed the Van Vleck farm for years in the past. Come and learn about our sheep and feel the beautiful, soft wool we use for knitting and felting. Participants will have a hands on experience to use some wool for an art project to take home. You will learn how a shepherd takes care of these incredible wooly wonders.

The Greater Danbury Irish Festival returns to Ives Concert Park for a three-day event this fall. Oliver Wolcott Library Harold and the Purple Crayon

10:30-11:30 am. Ages 3 to 8. Join Ms. Caitlin for a reading of the classic story, Harold and the Purple Crayon. Watch a short video based on the character. Then create your own story using your very own purple crayon. We will "write" a story together on bulletin board paper using purple die cut shapes. Each family will be able to take home a hardcover book for your personal storytime collection!

Flanders Nature Center Geology Field Trip

10 am - 12 noon. Have you wondered about Connecticut's mysterious volcanic past? Join Flanders on one of two scheduled tours of O&G's Southbury trap rock quarry for a field trip highlighting some fascinating geological facts and views of ancient volcanic rocks and minerals. It will be led by Dr. Thomas Fleming, Professor of Geology and the Chairperson of the Earth Science Department at Southern Connecticut State University. A fun and informative slide lecture will be followed by a guided tour of the quarry to identify ancient volcanic rocks and minerals. While slots remain open participants can choose between the morning or afternoon tour. Guests should meet at the Quarry Parking Lot. Pre-registration is required for this program.

PLANETARIUM SHOW AND TELESCOPE VIEWING: WCSU will host a 7 p.m. planetarium show, followed by telescope viewing of the sky from 8 to 10 p.m., at the Westside Observatory and Planetarium on the university's Westside campus, 43 Lake Ave. Extension in Danbury. The event will be free and open to the public. 

Sharon Art Walk

4-7 pm. This first time ever event will give the public an opportunity to experience and enjoy a broad range of art work over a three hour period in the concentrated Sharon Town Green area. Each of the participating galleries will be open from 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM on Saturday, September 16, 2017 and will host a reception with light refreshments for artists and visitors. Darren Winston Bookseller will display "Picture Book: New Works by Jeff Joyce" (on view September 14 through September 30). Hotchkiss Library of Sharon will exhibit a solo show of art work by Danielle Mailer entitled "Tiny Tremors: Paintings, Prints, Sculpture" (on view September 4 through October 31). Sharon Historical Society & Museum will present an invitational group show of multimedia landscape art called "The Land We Love" featuring the work of area artists Basia Goldsmith, Norma Kimmel, Ellen Moon, Patty Mullins, Ray Olsen and Babs Perkins (on view September 16 through October 27). The Sharon Town Hall Art Gallery will display "Female Perspective," a group show of recent work by local women artists including Linda Amerighi, Eve Biddle, Purdy Eaton and Tara Lisa Foley. In addition to gallery hopping among the participating galleries, visitors will have an opportunity to visit Standard Space and The Porchlight and to view art by Sharon artists Theresa Kenny, KK Kozik and Will Trowbridge, who will open their studios to the public during the Sharon Art Walk. All participating galleries are convenient to the Sharon Town Green: Darren Winston Bookseller at 81 Main Street; Hotchkiss Library of Sharon at 10 Upper Main Street; The Gallery @the SHS, located at Sharon Historical Society & Museum at 18 Main Street; and Sharon Town Hall at 63 Main Street.
