Litchfield Historical Society - Lecture: Hidden History of Litchfield County

7 South Street, Rte. 61, Litchfield, CT Phone: 860-567-4501.

On Sunday, 1 p.m. Traces of Litchfield Countys past are hidden in plain sight. Vestiges of long-abandoned railroad tracks crisscross the county while a decaying and unmarked cinder block on Above All Road in Warren is all that remains of a cornerstone of national defense. Among the all-but-forgotten stories is the 1886 fire that roared down West Street in Litchfield causing hotel guests to flee their rooms at the Mansion House. In Bantam, the Art Deco chairs offered by the Warren McArthur Corporation caught the attention of the War Department who asked the company to make seats for bombers in World War II. With these and other hidden tales author Peter C. Vermilyea explores the little-known history of Litchfield County. Fee: Free for members; $5 for non-members Registration: Yes, email
