Litchfield, CT -- The timing couldn't be better. Just when winter is dragging on and many folks are longing for a getaway, the inns and resorts of Connecticut's Litchfield Hills are offering a host of special packages, from romantic escapes to learning weekends. Romance in Riverton At the Old Riverton Inn (800-378-1796; www.rivertoninn.com) a 12-room Colonial charmer circa 1796, the Riverton Romantic Overnight package provides a room stocked with flowers, candy and champagne, a candlelight dinner for two and a big country breakfast for $185-$205. The offer is good until June. A two-night package, the Innkeeper's Special, offers room, two candlelight dinners, two breakfasts and a gift of candy from the Village Sweet Shoppe for $299 to $370, depending on the accommodations. Themes in Lakeville The Interlaken Inn, a resort in Lakeville (800-222-2909, www.interlakeninn.com) has a number of theme weekends planned. A Romantic Interlude gives couples a room and breakfast, complimentary cocktails, movie tickets for two and two entrees for the price of one in the resort restaurant for $169. Guests can also enjoy the inn's indoor fitness center and sauna. Interlaken plans a Dance Workshop weekend March 3 to 5, with demonstrations and lessons in waltz, swing, fox trot, cha cha and rumba. Packages include Friday and Saturday night accommodations, breakfast and lunch on Saturday and Sunday and Saturday night dinner and dancing for $349 per couple. In April on the 20th and 21st a Holistic Package offers room, breakfast and admission to the New England Holistic Fair for Animal Healing for $79 per person, double occupancy. This event is hosted by the Metaphysical Center (www.metaphysiacalcntr.com) in nearby Litchfield and includes free demonstrations and lectures on therapeutic touch, animal nutrition, grooming, massage, therapy, tai chi, aura photography, psychics and much more. Learning in Southbury Leisure Breakaways with learning themes are the specialty at Dolce Heritage, A Dolce Conference Resort in Southbury (800-932-3466; www.dolce.com), a contemporary resort with an indoor pool and billiards room. Heritage, History and Historic Towns covers the gracious New England towns in the Litchfield Hills with guided excursions to historic homes, museums, stores and churches. An Artful Adventure explores the worlds of antiques and art with stops at outstanding shops and galleries. Native Nature and the Connecticut Wine Trail are other options. Three-day, two-night packages begin at $169.50 per person including room, breakfast and planned activities. Antiques and Dining in Woodbury Antiquers should try the Longwood Country Inn (203-266-0800; www.longwoodcountryinn.com) in Woodbury, Connecticut's antiques capital, where Joy of the Hunt packages include two night lodging and breakfast, 1 lunch and 1 dinner for two and a "Survival Kit" containing notebook, pen, camera, tape measure and guides everything needed to insure happy hunting. Rates through March 30 are $445 to $645 for two. Special overnights at Longwood include Murder Mystery Nights, February 22 and March 8, theatrical events where guests solve the mystery while dining in high style, and From Paris to Monticello on March 27, a wine dinner featuring foods popular during Thomas Jefferson's day. Both events begin at $535.50, including lodging, dinner and breakfast. More Savings Several other inns are offering special savings. Lilac Hedges in Litchfield (860-567-8859) will give the third night free to guests who stay two nights in one of their two suites during April or May. In New Preston, The Boulders (800-552-6853; www.bouldersinn.com), an inn and luxury cottages overlooking Lake Waramaug, is taking $50 per night off the rates from Monday to Thursday through April, and Hillside Studio Bed and Breakfast (860-868-6607; www.hillsidestudiobnb.com) has an exclusive offer for grandparents who want to share their private two-bedroom suite on Lake Waramaug with the grandkids.
